What is plagiarism?
At Newcastle University, plagiarism is defined as “the unacknowledged use of ideas or works from another source, presented as your own, without specific acknowledgement”. Plagiarism is considered cheating by exam boards. HOWEVER, you can easily avoid it by referencing properly.
As you do your research, keep a note of everything you have used or read, including titles, authors, page numbers, website addresses (and when you last accessed them), journal titles etc. This will help you with your referencing.
Examples of plagiarism
- Cutting and pasting from the internet
- Copying from other students
- Not acknowledging a source
- Using an idea from a book or journal without acknowledging where you got it from
